The Worlds Report - Issue #4

Macro tide: the mix of Roblox games behind the week-over-week comparison held steady again, so the genre moves below are the cleanest read in a month. Demand did concentrate harder than last week (the top 10 took 55.1% of new visits, up from 52.8%). Shares below are relative shares of demand, not platform-wide totals.

TL;DR
  • The three biggest genre risers this week each had a dated public event behind them, which almost never happens. Roblox Horror went 8.4% to 10.8% of new visits on a July 23 update to Murder Mystery 2 (+87.4M new visits, on a game that is twelve years old), and Tower Defense went 1.8% to 4.4% on one title, Anime Expeditions, whose Update 0.5 landed July 25 and added 144.4M new visits. Most weeks the honest answer for a mover is that no cause turned up; this week one did, three times.
  • Fortnite's Roleplay lane collapsed exactly as last week's watch call expected: 5.4% of CCU down to 1.0%, an 82% fall, with zero Roleplay islands in the top-15. Last week's surge was the July 16 to 18 content event, and the moment the event ended the lane evaporated. A real lane does not vanish in seven days.
  • Roblox Simulator/Tycoon ceded share a fifth straight week (32.4% to 29.7%; the arc is 42.6, 38.6, 34.4, 32.4, 29.7). Five weeks is long enough to read as a real rotation rather than noise, and for once the demand it freed went somewhere legible, into the two genres that had updates behind them.
  • The GTA-6 island wave re-formed on Fortnite, taking the Simulator bucket that holds those driving islands from 11.7% to 23.1% of CCU with five GTA-VI islands in the top-15. The week's fastest riser peaked at 536 on its release day and was drawing 2 players seven days later. Ride the theme, and budget to replace the island every few days.
  • Scorecard: 5 hit, 1 partial, 0 miss, the strongest week this report has had. Running 26 hit, 7 partial, 3 miss. The one break was the specific-title leg again, now five straight weeks of the same split.
The Scorecard

Running record: 26 hits · 7 partials · 3 misses

Last week's six calls, graded against this week's numbers. Five hit, one partial, no misses. One disclosure belongs up front rather than buried: call 2 shipped on July 21 as build the returnable venue at MED confidence and was revised on July 23 to watch it before building at LOW-MED, after news of Fortnite's mid-week content event arrived. The revision landed four days before grading, the pre-registered metric was not touched, and both wordings sit on the public record in the track record.

  • ◐ PARTIAL

On Roblox, bet on the co-op cohort, not a single flagship; the lane just proved it outlives its leader. MED-HIGH

Survival/Co-op held at 13.3% of new visits, past the 13% leg. The cohort leg broke: the top-5 accelerators were a Tower Defense title, a Horror title, two Simulator titles and a Party title, with no Survival/Co-op title among them, and Animal Hospital fell further to the #1 decelerator (down 38.9M). Fifth straight week where the genre leg held and the specific-title leg broke.

  • ✓ HIT

On Fortnite, watch the social-hangout lane before building it; the widest-reach island this week was a hangout, but the surge lined up with a major mid-week content update, so wait to see whether it holds once the event fades. LOW-MED

Both legs of the metric failed, which is the reading the call was watching for. Zero Roleplay/social islands in the Fortnite top-15, and Roleplay fell from 5.4% of CCU to 1.0%, an 82% drop the week the July 16 to 18 content event unwound. The call was to watch rather than build, and its metric was pre-registered as the test of whether the lane was real rather than as a prediction that it would hold. Anyone who read the earlier wording and built a returnable venue would have shipped into a lane that lost 82% of its demand in seven days.

  • ✓ HIT

If you ship Fortnite clones, run a factory, not a franchise; budget for 48-hour island lifespans. HIGH

PvP 45.8% plus Obby 16.8% was 62.6% of CCU, past the 60% leg. PvP shed a lot of share on its own (58.1% to 45.8%) as the GTA-themed Simulator bucket took a slice, and the two default templates still carried the platform.

  • ✓ HIT

Take the Survival-to-Fortnite lane; it is the last open arbitrage flag and it is now a vacuum. Build it short, one 8-to-12 minute co-op loop. MED

Fortnite Survival was 0.0% of CCU with zero islands in the top-15, a fifth straight week open. The entire genre peaked at 5 concurrent players on Fortnite, against 13.3% of new visits on the Roblox side of the gap.

  • ✓ HIT

Time a horror/escape build now; it is rising on both platforms at once, which is the rarest signal this report gets. MED

Roblox Horror came in at 10.8% of new visits (up from 8.4%) and Fortnite Horror at 7.4% of CCU. Both legs met, a second straight week of the co-movement. One caveat on the Roblox side: the lift was update-driven rather than a broad rotation, since Murder Mystery 2 alone added 87.4M new visits off a July 23 update.

  • ✓ HIT

On VRChat, ship the update, not the sequel; on a destination curve your existing favorites are stored demand and an update is how you withdraw it. LOW-MED

The top of the occupancy tier again went to a world that got there on a content update to an existing world rather than a fresh launch, and it was the same world as last week on a second consecutive update. Update-driven returns also led the week's favorites momentum.

Movers of the week
Fortnite Roleplay / Life FN -82% 1% share
Fortnite Simulator / driving FN +64% 23.1% share
Fortnite PvP / Fighting FN -26% 45.8% share
Roblox Horror / Escape RBX +27% 10.8% share
Roblox Tower Defense RBX +139% 4.4% share
Roblox Survival / Co-op RBX -13% 13.3% share
Roblox Simulator / Tycoon RBX -10% 29.7% share
Fortnite Obby / trickshot FN +3% 16.8% share
Fortnite Horror / Escape FN +10% 7.4% share

Two caveats on this chart. Tower Defense's +139% sits on a small base and runs off the axis, so read the number rather than the bar; the real signal there is the 2.6 points of share it gained (1.8% to 4.4%), and nearly all of it is one title's July 25 update. Second, the Fortnite Simulator bucket holds GTA-style driving islands, which is why it can jump to 23.1% of CCU on a hype cycle that has nothing to do with simulators. Roblox Simulator/Tycoon shows here at -10%, but its story is share: a fifth straight week ceding, 32.4% to 29.7%.

Arbitrage gap of the week

Survival / Co-op PvE

Three cross-platform gaps flagged this week, up from one, and the composition is the story. Last week the board was down to a single flag because Fortnite's content event had temporarily lifted Roleplay out of trap territory. The event ended, Roleplay fell back to 1.0% of CCU, and the structural picture snapped back.

Two of the three flags are curve traps rather than openings. Obby holds 16.8% of Fortnite CCU against 1.3% of Roblox new visits, because a disposable parkour run has nowhere to compound on a winner-take-all curve. Roleplay is 16.4% on Roblox against 1.0% on Fortnite, and the round trip it just made (0.8%, then 5.4%, then 1.0% inside a fortnight) is what an event looks like rather than a vacancy.

That leaves Survival/Co-op, in its fifth straight week of near-total vacancy: 13.3% of Roblox new visits against 0.0% of Fortnite CCU, where the whole genre peaked at 5 concurrent players. There is one honest asymmetry to respect. Survival's median session on Fortnite is 27.8 minutes, roughly double the platform's 13.6, which is most of the reason almost nobody ships it there.

How a creator exploits it: build the deep version for Roblox, where a returning base compounds into something discovery will feed, and ship a short-round co-op version (one 8 to 12 minute loop) into the Fortnite lane. The low-twitch observation hook is cheap to build and returnable, which is the profile a small creator can actually ship.

Also open:

  • Obby is 16.8% of Fortnite CCU against 1.3% on Roblox, but that gap is a curve trap: a disposable parkour run has nowhere to compound on Roblox's winner-take-all curve.
  • Roleplay is 16.4% of Roblox new visits against 1.0% of Fortnite CCU. It looked like an opening for exactly one week, during a content event, and it is back to a trap now.
Platform shapes

One input, three genre signatures

All three platforms ran the same input this week, a content update or an IP event, and each turned it into a different genre signature. On Roblox (winner-take-all, where the top 10 hold 55.1% of new visits) an update compounds an incumbent: Murder Mystery 2 is twelve years old and added 87.4M new visits off a single July 23 update, because a large returning base can be re-activated and discovery then amplifies the spike. Anime Expeditions did the same thing from the other end of the age curve, taking a newer title to 144.4M off Update 0.5. On Fortnite (long tail, where the top island holds 4.0% of CCU and the median island peaked at 6 on 13.6 minute sessions) there is no incumbent to compound, so GTA-6 Trailer 3 hype instead spawned five fan islands into the top-15 that each spike and die in days; the week's fastest riser peaked at 536 on release day and was drawing 2 players seven days later. On VRChat (destination-driven, where the top 10 hold 43.9% of occupancy) an update re-activates stored favorites, and the top of the tier went to a world doing exactly that for a second consecutive week. So ship an update is good advice on all three platforms, but it means compound a returning base on Roblox, ride a perishable hype wave on Fortnite, and withdraw against stored favorites on VRChat. Pick the platform first and then the growth mechanic its shape rewards, since importing the wrong one is the common way a proven mechanic flops.

Roblox

top-10 share 55.1% top-1 10.8%

Winner-take-all. The top 10 hold 55.1% of new visits (up from 52.8%), and the median world saw about 102,106 new visits this week, up 29%. A game that holds players compounds into a giant, and a more concentrated week like this one is what two update-driven giants look like.

Fortnite Creative

top-10 share 20.2% top-1 4%

Long tail. The median island peaked at 6 CCU on roughly 13.6 minute sessions. A fresh niche island is viable and disposable, and a launch spike can decay to nothing inside a week.

VRChat

top-10 share 43.9%

Destination-driven. Occupancy clusters around worlds people return to. Favorites act as the return signal, and a content update to an existing world can retake the top of the tier.

VRChat, in brief

Game-format worlds held the top of the occupancy tier for a second week, and the world that got there did it on another content update to something that already existed rather than a fresh launch. That is now two weeks of the same pattern, and it is the whole read on this platform: favorites are a stored claim on future attention, and an update is how a builder withdraws against it. Avatar-search and utility worlds kept leading the favorites momentum, and one seasonal home sat high in the tier on a Japanese summer event, which is transient presence rather than a durable world. A large share of presence still sits in private, friends-first instances, so build the returnable version rather than the one-shot.

Analyst notes

For about a month the honest answer to why did this genre move has been that no cause turned up, so the number had to stand on its own. This week three of the biggest moves came with dates attached: a July 23 update, a July 25 update, and a trailer hype cycle dated July 20. That does not make it better data, it makes it a different kind of week, and the useful part is what it says about how long each of those moves should be expected to last. Fortnite’s Roleplay lane is the control group. It went 0.8% to 5.4% of CCU during a content event, we said watch it rather than build it, and it came back to 1.0% the week the event ended.

Next week we are watching whether Horror and Tower Defense give back the share their updates bought, whether the Cuddles and Chaos event Epic started on July 24 lifts creature and collection islands the way the last first-party event lifted Roleplay (and whether it unwinds the same way after August 25), and whether the Roblox co-op lane keeps holding 13% without producing a single accelerating title. Roblox also reports Q2 earnings on Thursday, which is the first real read on whether the summer school break reverses two quarters of sequential decline in daily users.

This week's calls

Each call below gets graded in next week's issue against the metric named on it.

  1. On Roblox, the update is the growth event. Build a base for a few weeks, then land a named content update on it rather than chasing a cold launch. MED-HIGH

Graded next week on: At least one title in the Roblox top-5 accelerators is a flagged content update rather than a first launch, and either Roblox Horror holds at least 9% of new visits or Tower Defense holds at least 3%.

  2. Keep betting the Roblox co-op genre even though the flagship leg keeps breaking. A lane carried by breadth instead of a hit is the safest one for a new entrant. MED

Graded next week on: Roblox Survival/Co-op holds at least 12% of new visits.

  3. On Fortnite, run the factory and lean into the GTA-6 theme while the hype window is open, but budget for islands that die within days. HIGH

Graded next week on: Fortnite PvP and Obby combined hold at least 55% of CCU, and this week's fastest rising island (RED VS BLUE NEON staz) is absent from the Fortnite top-15 by peak CCU.

  4. Play Fortnite's new creature and collection event window as a rental, not a lane, and set the exit date now. It runs to August 25. MED

Graded next week on: Fortnite creature, pet, and collection themed islands (which land in the Simulator and RPG buckets) gain share of CCU while the event runs. The decisive test is the week after August 25, when the event ends.

  5. Take the Survival-to-Fortnite lane. It is the one opening the data still endorses and it has been vacant five weeks. Build it short. MED

Graded next week on: Still zero Survival islands in the Fortnite top-15 by peak CCU (the lane stays open).

  6. On VRChat, ship the update, not the sequel. Favorites are stored demand and an update is how you withdraw it. MED

Graded next week on: The VRChat top occupancy tier again includes a world that reached it through a content update to an existing world rather than a fresh launch.

Data health
  • INFO Data trust is solid this run. All three platforms' figures are current to July 27 and the mix of Roblox games behind the week-over-week comparison held steady, so the genre moves here are the cleanest read in a month. Demand did concentrate harder than last week: the top 10 took 55.1% of new visits (up from 52.8%) and the median world's new visits rose about 29%, which is consistent with two update-driven giants pulling the curve upward.
  • INFO Most of this week's biggest moves are event-driven, and we are labelling them that way on purpose. Roblox Horror's rise and Tower Defense's jump each trace to a single title's dated update (July 23 and July 25). Fortnite's Simulator jump traces to GTA-6 Trailer 3 hype dated July 20, plus a smaller tail from two Fortnite in-game events on July 23 and July 27. None of those is a structural lane opening, and each should be expected to give share back when its driver expires. Fortnite Roleplay's 82% fall this week is what that looks like on the way down.
  • INFO Small-base WoW% is noise. Roblox Party (+126% on a 1.1% share) and Tower Defense (+139% on 4.4%), and Fortnite RPG (+148%), sit on bases too small to carry a conclusion. Weight share and absolute over the multiple. Tower Defense earns its place on this week's board through the 2.6 points of share it gained, not through the percentage.
  • INFO Scorecard disclosure. Last week's call 2 was revised after publication: it shipped July 21 as build the returnable venue at MED confidence and was revised July 23 to watch it before building at LOW-MED, when news of Fortnite's July 16 to 18 content event changed the read on the surge. The revision came four days before grading, the pre-registered metric was not changed, and both wordings are on the public record in the track record.
  • INFO Both weekly spot-checks passed. A top Roblox world read within about 0.005% of the public games API on cumulative visits and 0.003% on favorites, with live players 3.2% under, which is normal drift in the rising direction for a world that size. A Fortnite island read exactly against its all-time peak (536 against 536, dated to its July 20 release) and confirmed the decay directly: it was drawing 2 concurrent players a week later. VRChat was not re-checked this run.
  • INFO Fortnite island codes rotate through discovery, so per-island week-over-week is not possible; genre trends compare this week's sampled island population to last week's. The Fortnite Simulator bucket includes GTA-style driving islands (tagged as driver-sim), which is why that share can jump on a GTA hype cycle. VRChat reads stay genre-level. Newly seen means a world first showed up in our figures, not that it launched.
